How the calculator works
- Measure each countertop section and add them up (length × depth ÷ 144 for inches).
- Pick the material and your area’s cost level.
- Tick tear-out and sink work if they are part of the job.
The calculator multiplies the measured area by an installed range for the material, adds demolition and sink work when selected, then scales the total for the local cost level. The range is wide on purpose: slab grade, edges, seams and access move real quotes.
Assumptions to check
- Installed prices per square foot by material: laminate $25–$55, butcher block $45–$100, solid surface $50–$120, granite $60–$140, quartz $70–$160, marble $80–$200.
- Tear-out adds $5–$15 per sq ft; a sink cutout and fitting adds $300–$900.
- Lower-cost areas × 0.85, major or luxury markets × 1.25.
Frequently asked questions
How do I measure countertop square footage?
Measure the length and depth of each rectangular countertop section in inches, multiply them, add all sections, and divide by 144. Measure islands separately and confirm the fabricator’s rules for overhangs and backsplashes.
Does the estimate include installation?
Yes. The material rates are installed planning ranges. Optional removal and sink cutout or fitting costs are added separately so the scope remains visible.
Why can two countertops of the same size cost differently?
Slab grade, pattern, thickness, edge profile, seams, cutouts, access, demolition, backsplash work, and local fabrication capacity can create large differences even when square footage matches.
Should I buy a slab from this estimate?
No. Use it to set an initial budget, then ask a fabricator to template the space and provide an itemized quote before ordering material.
